Updates of the Amnesty Program 2018 in Kuwait

As few weeks of the Amnesty Program 2018 that granted by the Kuwaiti government to illegal expats is approaching, more and more Filipino household service workers (HSW) are absconding or running away from their sponsors and are going to the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait.

Officials and representatives from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait were quoted as saying that from the usual 5 to 10 HSW per day arriving at the Philippine Embassy asking for help, it has become more than 50 persons seeking assistance and wanting to be repatriated back home to the Philippines.

The shelter provided for distressed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), mostly HSW, cannot accommodate too much people, but they are not turning them down or driving them away. Officials from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Kuwait have reportedly requested additional shelter for distressed OFWs during this Amnesty Program 2018.

Officials have also called for the understanding of other Filipino HSWs who are being treated well by their sponsors to remain calm and to stay at their sponsors houses during this time. They do not need to runaway and they can continue with their work in Kuwait.

However, OFWs who illegally stay in Kuwait, are encouraged to avail of the Amnesty Program 2018 so they can be repatriated back to the Philippines for free.
