Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III is in Saudi Arabia making final preparations to bring home more than 9,000 Filipinos who lost their jobs as a result of the economic crisis in their host country. in Oil prices have dropped in recent years, thus, the business sector has experienced some slump.
Secretary Bello brought President Rodrigo Duterte’s letter of gratitude to King Salman for extending assistance to the stranded OFWs. The Saudi Monarch is giving free exit Visas and free airfare to all stranded Filipinos in the Kingdom so they may all return to their families in the Philippines.
Secretary Bello is also determined to encourage the stranded OFWs to return home as jobs will be waiting for them under the government’s programs through the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Another branch of government assistance for returning OFWs and their families will come from Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.
Officials from the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) also came with Secretary Bello to Saudi.
The concentration of OFWs came from the cities of Al Khobar, Jeddah and Riyadh.
