The year 2015 will be a breakthrough year for nearly 600 Philippine municipalities belonging to the fourth to sixth classes because there will be FREE Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) hotspots access for many citizens. This will be made possible through the Television White Space (TVWS) Internet technology project of The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)’s Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO).
The DOST-ICTO collaborated with Nityo Infotech, a Filipino-Singaporean firm presently doing a pilot test of the TVWS technology by tapping unused broadcast frequencies thereby providing broadband internet connectivity to projected areas like Tacloban City and Tubigon, Bohol hard hit by calamities last year.
This project of DOST-ICTO bridges the gaps between the world and many far flung areas in the Philippines. Families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), grade school, high school and college students will benefit much from this Wireless Fidelity project.
